How Lee should have sung it.

leave a comment

Over the course of American Idol season 9, one of eventual winner Lee DeWyze’s defining characteristics as a singer was to take a popular song, add his own spin to it, make it recognisable but somehow different from the original and rock it out. I mean, his covers of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘The Boxer’ and Shania Twain’s ‘You’re Still the One’ were arguably better than, but definitely different from, the originals.

That is why it was so puzzling how, having chosen U2′s ‘Beautiful Day’ as his winner’s single, Lee pretty much followed the original arrangement completely. True, he did add his own subtle nuances here and there but by and large the song was done pretty much in the same vein as the original, a move which got him panned by many (including me).

He should have just sung it this way, the way he did in an Access Hollywood performance after winning the competition:

Whether it is better than the original or not is again arguable (his take on the song during the finals definitely wasn’t, though) but it cannot be denied that Lee transformed the song almost into something entirely new. True, this version might be more low-key than an Idol coronation required but, hey, if you can’t copy the original well, might as well do something totally different, right?

I actually prefer this one, personally, because it not only brings out Lee’s best points as a singer (the emotion and the raw grit in his voice) and hides his flaws (propensity to go off-pitch, lack of real, explosive vocal power), but it actually sounds like a contemporary alt-pop single that someone like James Morrison or Gavin DeGraw could have whipped up.

This week’s American Idol eliminatees…

leave a comment

…looked like pretty cool people to hang out with but they won’t be missed as performers. One started out as a huge frontrunner but totally fizzled out in the worst possible way (boringly) and the other was never that great but had a few (also boring) moments.

Totally expected, totally deserved, and in the next two weeks Tim and Aaron just need to leave to make a perfect top 5 for this season and redeem it slightly.

American Idol 9 Top 9 (again) First Impressions.

So, it’s the top 9 again, only this time it’s even scarier during the results because two will be going. This week, the theme is Elvis Presley and the mentor is Glambert and I have no idea what’s the connection between the two is but I’m loving how, even though they keep saying it’s a girl’s (i.e. Crystal’s) season, they keep choosing themes that lean towards the guys more. I’m not saying girls can’t rock Elvis, but it’s obviously more suited to guys, y’know?

In any case, let’s see how they did!

American Idol 9: First to go!

Boo for no group song! David Cook really showed why he won two seasons ago. I mean, there isn’t a single guy this year who can match his raw vocal power (much as I love Lee, he’s a pale shadow of him, for now).

Anyway, Spoiler alert!

American Idol 9: Top 12 sing the Rolling Stones.

And…it’s the first live show on the huge stage (and whoa, is it HUGE) this season. What’s with the X-Factor-ish introduction, with the cheesy announcer? Well, this week’s theme is Rolling Stones and, although I thought I didn’t know many of their songs, I saw the performance list tonight and I actually recognise like half of them so woo for me not being a musical doofus!

So, before I ramble on (and I will be prone to that tonight as I’m really tired from having to use my brain a day at school) too much, let’s head to the performances…

American Idol 9: Top 16 Guys review

So the girls did pretty well last night. Would the guys match up this week? Hopefully Lee continues to get better (and less pitchy), Andrew finally ups his game and that darn Todrick gets himself off the show. Here we go!

American Idol 9: Top 16 Girls review

leave a comment

Last week, I thought the girls improved from their disastrous first week and it actually felt like a real American Idol semifinals ep. Crystal and Siobhan were the clear standouts and Katie Stevens continued her downward spiral to bland obscurity. So, how did they do this week? Let’s find out!

American Idol: Top 20 review.

This is hilariously late and, as such, since nobody’s going to read it, probably, I’m going to try to keep it short (although, wiht 240 people, how short can it be?). These are my song-by-song recap of the past two weeks of American Idol performances, the first of which I can only label as probably the worst semi-final in Idol history last week’s shows (tried to do both top 24 and top 20 but it took forever).

Quick respite.

Yay I finished my history essays! They might not be very well-written (one started out pretty well but then devolved into one of those that got progressively worse the more I tried to improve it) or be A-worthy but I’m just happy I finished ahead of schedule!

Haven’t been able to catch up with American Idol this week so there’s no recap although, from what I’ve read, I didn’t miss much. Many are saying that, based on the first round, this might be the worst top 24 in Idol history and that there wasn’t a single standout performance from both guys and girls. Even all the hot faves fell short. That’s sad.

In any case, before I go off for some sleep before continuing my fortnight from hell, here’s a picture that aptly expresses my feelings:

Yes. So stop giving me notifications. And stop sending me random not-real gifts (real ones are fine, though). And no, I do not have a gun to spare or I sure as hell am not going to offer you any help in your war.
